Hoʻiwai was created because we believe that research about Native Hawaiians should be led by Native Hawaiians, grounded in our ʻike kūpuna, and guided by the needs and priorities of our communities. Too often, research about us highlights deficits rather than strengths, and the data are held by institutions outside our control. We believe it is time to reclaim this space to do research for us, by us, ensuring that our voices are centered, our data are protected, and our stories uplift what is strong and resilient about our kānaka.
